Famine risk escalates in Southern Somalia ahead of Deyr rains

Escalating

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification in October 2026, 5.4 million people face high acute food insecurity, including nearly 26,000 internally displaced persons in Baidoa facing Catastrophe. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network warned on 7 October 2026 that extreme flooding during the October to December Deyr season could trigger Famine. The World Food Programme reported on 29 September 2026 that a funding shortfall limited its food response to 670,000 people. Health clinics are turning away patients due to a lack of resources.
