Hundreds of health facilities face closure amid funding shortfalls

Nearly 600 health facilities across Somalia are at risk of closure due to a significant decline in humanitarian funding. The potential closures, reported on 7 October 2026, threaten to severely disrupt access to essential medical care, maternal health services, and disease outbreak responses nationwide. The health sector in Somalia relies heavily on international humanitarian funding, which has faced substantial shortfalls this year.

According to Somalia's Minister of Health and Social Care, Dr. Ali Haji Adan, reported by Hiiraan Online, 7 October 2026, nearly 600 health facilities were at risk of closure. According to the UN Financial Tracking Service, 8 October 2026, the Health cluster for the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan is only 26.3 percent funded, having received $21 million out of a required $80 million.

The Federal Ministry of Health and health cluster partners are managing the situation, and an emergency funding push has kept the facilities open for now. Maintaining these services is critical as the country manages ongoing cholera and measles outbreaks and braces for El Niño-induced flooding, which typically increases the caseload of waterborne and vector-borne diseases.

It remains uncertain how long the emergency funding will sustain these facilities. Furthermore, it is not specified which specific regions or districts are most vulnerable to closures if funding gaps return.
